Service XC Running Coaches for the 2008 Season

Charissa Johnson, Head Coach (email)

I am a teacher at Service High School and a former SHS student. This is my third year as a cross country running coach, second year as head coach. I also coach the girls distance for Track and Field at Service. I am an avid runner. My own running career began at Service and continued at Linfield College. Now I train on my own and with my team;  I participate in local races as often as possible.

LA Piper, Assistant Coach (email)

I moved to Alaska in 1994, it got into my blood, and I am happy to call it home. I enjoy exploring the local trails with my dog Cisco and have recently added the Homestead Trail to a list of favorite loops. In addition to coaching, I teach Seminar Language Arts, World History, and Poetry at Service. I worked with the XC team last year and loved every minute of it! Service runners amaze me with their strength, dedication, and motivation, and I am looking forward to doing more hill-repeats and yoga with the team this year.

"The Truth is that Running Hurts. No one gets faster without meeting their personal pain barrier straight on. No amount of junk miles, fun runs or affirmations are going to get you over the hill at the five mile mark in a 10k. However, what will pull you through is solid prep with hard hill runs and interval work." Manciata's explanation of the Truth about Running

"Stadiums are for spectators. We runners have nature and that is much better.."
